Food Defense Mitigation Strategy Development and Training Delivery and Educational Outreach
Since 2006 CSS has been supporting the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in designing, developing, and implementing tools and training to provide the food industry with resources for implementing food defense plans and procedures. Our efforts directly support FDA's ongoing implementation of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). Signed into law on January 4, 2011, FSMA aims to ensure the U.S. food supply is safe by shifting the focus of federal regulators from responding to contamination to preventing it. In support of this effort, CSS has created the following tools and products:
- Food Defense Mitigations Strategies Database - An online, public resource that provides prevention and mitigation strategies to address the potential for terrorism attacks in the food industry
- A DVD video-based training program tailored to the food and agriculture industry - An informative and entertaining video that teaches front-line food industry employees how to be alert to threats to the food supply
- Food/Agricultural Event Response Activities Kits - Classroom training providing common discussion-based exercises enabling federal, state and local government personnel; law enforcement; and first responders to validate training, as well as practice strategic and tactical prevention, protection, response, and recovery capabilities in a risk-simulated environment
